Although I find this a very cool idea, it doesnt make sense cost wise. IMO all the functions attainable via the strap on controlls can be achieved without them. This would only create more plastic crap to buy, carry around and lose or break.

    Thats just me though...

I do like the joy stick idea:D

    Fixed.

Dell, Apple and HP all charge around the same price for their Xeon workstations.

    Dell Precision T3500

    Intel Xeon W3530 2.8GHz
    3GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC
    256MB ATI FireMV 2260
    1TB 7200rpm hard drive

    Price: 1389$

    Mac Pro

    Intel Xeon W3530 2.8GHz
    3GB 1066MHz DDR3 ECC
    1GB ATI 5770
    1TB 7200rpm hard drive

    Price: 2499$

The ATI FireMV 2260 costs 120$ on Amazon so price wise it is similar to ATI 5770. You can add a lot beefier GPU and still save a fortune compared to Mac Pro.

I really hope they have some kind of external storage for the 360.

As far as using the AppleTV for downloaded content, I agree. There are some problems on that end at the moment that is being worked out.

When I download Jericho I get screwed. I can watch it for free the night it comes out in 1080i but if I miss that episode I can either pay for less then DVD quality (appleTV) or pay for 720p (xbox360).

If they do something like that, power to them- as long as they don't charge a ridiculous fee I'll probably subscribe if it offers something netflix doesn't....but I don't see me dropping netflix anytime soon. If they decide to try and shut-out netflix on their (apple's) platforms in order to promote their own product, I will definitely side with netflix. Netflix has been good to me and I'm pretty loyal.

    *Edit*

Although, it might be really nice (at the beginning at least) as far as buffers and video quality go: My ISP is ****ing horrible about throttling Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc. I have an 8 down/2 up connection, and yet it takes me 10 minutes of buffering to watch a 5 minute 320p youtube clip? **** that. If they weren't the ONLY ISP available here in podunk, I would drop their ass.

The difference compared to the old one is to small. I assume that many iMac users with an iMac 2007/2008/2009/2010 don't buy a new one.

Then you've not been reading the latest benchmarks. The top of the line will outperform my 2009 quad MacPro.

However, I'll agree that of the years you listed, the age of your current iMac is likely directly related to the chances you will upgrade.

Any news about more Macs being sold is good news to me. Over the summer I moved my DSL and Phone # to a new location, it took a week for them to make the switch so I had a Dial-Up # for that week. The person I spoke with when getting that # wanted to know what kind of computer I was using and when I said Mac OSX he said "...more of you guys out there than I thought".
He's even noticed more people calling with Macs. Cool.

    Worst...streaming....ever....

And this is the company that supposedly will be handed the crown for online movie rentals and downloads?

This happens year after year. The day of the keynote (and sometimes days/weeks afterward) always sees enormous demand for the stream but they never allocate enough to handle it. You think that they would have figured it out by now, and they better pretty damn quick if they expect to stream movie rentals - reliably that is.

I have a 3 megabit DSL connection and this is what I'm getting. They get an F. Pathetic.

If the school confiscates your laptop, you go to the police and file charges. FOR WHAT, ENFORCING SCHOOL RULES?

And the school is in big trouble. Technically what they did was stealing. They have absolutely no right confiscating anything. THEY HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO CONFISCATE ON THEIR PREMISES IF THEY BELIVE ITS A RISK TO THEIR INFRASTRUCTURE.

What they can do is prevent your access to the building if your are carrying something which they deem "against the rules". But taking away a $1000+ notebook? That's a serious offense HARDLY

and I wouldn't let it go so easily. File a complain with the school administration, if they don't react, go to the police. I am serious. There are some things which you just can't let slide. THE POLICE WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE, FACT.

You don't have a clue what you're talking about do you...?

I'll get slammed for this - but I don't care. Apple is playing a big part in the dumbing down of (some of) society by taking control/options away from users and keeping a walled garden.

Making tech simpler and more enjoyable to use for everyone is *helping* society. You shouldn't need any kind of extra training to use a "computer."

Apple's "walled garden" is the REASON for their success. Didn't you know that? They've been doing the walled garden thing for over a decade. The result? Exxon Mobil's about to occupy second place. Apple has more spare cash than the total worth of a lot of not-insignificant tech companies. And consumers time and time again have given their consent. Apple's approach is a *good* thing for everyone. Their results show pretty clearly that consumers have said YES to Apple's approach. Yes in good times, yes in a recession. It's been constant, some would say totally unprecedented growth for Apple. That's huge. Both because a lot of their gear tends to be more expensive, their ecosystem is controlled, and they usually don't license anything out to anyone (I thank my lucky stars for this last point every day.)

We don't need more "options." There are so many options out there it's absolutely staggering. What we *need* is simpler, usable, enjoyable tech, for *everyone.* Throwing an ocean of options at the user is not the answer. Having a ****-load of options available purely for the sake of having them available, is not the answer. Making tech easy, accessible, and as worry-free as possible is the answer. That means you can't take the stuff you make and let other people mess with it. That means closed licensing. That means actually paying attention to what is done with the tech. That means keeping a tight rein on who can alter it and how it's done.

This is why Apple is so successful, usually by doing the opposite of everyone else. Which, in turn, prompts everyone else (with a few exceptions) to move more in Apple's direction, ironically.

Now your mom and your grandma can use tech and look like experts doing it, thanks to Apple. If you think that particular perspective doesn't matter, you're in for a huge surprise over the next few years.

The only benefit to transcoding prior to effects/grading would be to aid system performance. It will not result in better image quality.

Yes and no, as I understand it. A smart guy said "sure when you transcode an 8bit 4:2:0 file to ProRes you won't be getting any more bits in the bucket, but you get a bigger bucket to swirl them all around in." (I paraphrase)

Every time you hit "render", your file gets rendered in whatever you have asked FCP to use. If it's an 8-bit 4:2:0 format (even DV) then the calculations applied to those colours may shift them away from the rest of the footage (or to use that metaphor, swirling the bits in that small bucket will result in losing some). Render a clip over and over again (say, text overlays) and the shifts may become noticeable. You may also get compression artefacts sneaking in.

ProRes is high bitrate, 4:2:2 10bit colour so more subtle variations of colour can be rendered in, rather than the crude 8bit steppings you sometimes see in things like DV.

Flipside, I reckon editing AVCHD directly is fine if you are usually a "cut this, butt that, overlay this, trim that" kind of guy. And I am.

Id like to back CoffeeDrinker here. Referencing software a specialized software packages. Most of them will meet a long list of requirement, including (1) access and download of citation data and original documents to a dozen or sometimes more than a hundred paid or free databases, (2) managing large sets of references, often including the PDF of the original, in a meaningful way, and (3) create citations and lists of references in new texts, according to one of dozen (sometimes >100) formats prescribed by journals. This is all complicated because scientific disciplines are very different in terms of ways to cite (often for good reasons): medical researchers quite different form historians, and economics quote different from electrical engineers. With this complexity and with the widely diverging user needs, it would not make sense to me to have this all integrated into an office suite like Office.

While Endnote is certainly among the best known, there is a wide range of such programs, ranging in focus, functionality, and price (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_reference_management_software).

Id like to highlight Bookends, a Mac-specific program that is very reasonably priced and has served me and many other enthusiasts for already quite a while. Its developers offer great support and regularly implement needs expressed by their users. For students and other users that are on a tighter budget, Zotero offers a good open-source alternative.

    All the best, Rudi

    Whoops, missed that.

Well, why wouldn't a Mac recognise 32TB? Of course it will, however, you only get 32TB of usable storage if you configure that device as JBOD or RAID0 (which is bonkers).

But to be honest, the probability that everyone here has got a Mac with that very unit, so that he can tell you specific details is almost zero.
So your best bet is to call the Dulce and ask them anything you want to know.

For $5000 (does it actually include drives? If not, add another $3000) I definitely wouldn't buy that thing without knowing every little detail about it.

That being said, Netflix inclusion is the only reason I bought the ATV2. If they cut Netflix, I'll by another product.

    Apple should just buy Netflix.

You do realise that Vista's thunder is only being stolen amongst the Mac users. Don't kid yourself, the release of Vista is going to be the biggest thing in software releases in the world's media this year. Leopard is small change compared to the massive amounts of press that MS are going to drum up for Vista.

My list of releases in terms of press coverage:

    1. Vista
    2. Office 2007
    3. Adobe Creative Suite 3
    4. Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard

Don't get me wrong, I'm a great Mac fan but you just can't seriously think that the next release of OSX is going to steal any press thunder from the long-awaited new version of Windows. The press will eat up anything MS feeds it, they'll hail all the features we've had for years that have finally made it into Vista as the most innovative and fresh ideas and this is why Apple won't be releasing until at least March.

Come March, any press stories about Vista troubles will be at their peak after new adopters have had it on their systems for a month and any bugs will be showing themselves. It's then that Apple need to get OSX into the mind of the public.

You are 100% correct. We will be bombarded by the MS media blitz. MS has always been a better marketing company than a tech company. Nearly every app that MS has was bought, borrowed, or stolen from somebody else. They are successful due to much better marketing of their product.

    http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/t1000/[/url].
If you always have lots of active threads, and you're concerned about overall throughput and not how fast each thread runs, then the Sun T1000 might make sense. It's similar to the Blue Gene, in that it has lots of slow processors. (The T1000 is 4-way Hyper-Threaded per core, and most of us understand the issues with hyperthreading.)

The Woodcrest has much faster performance per thread, but only has four cores (threads) per dual socket system.

Also note that Sun's power, performance and heat claims haven't been updated - they're still comparing their systems to Netburst Xeons, not Woodcrest.

My fiance is protestant, went to a Catholic High School and now teaches in both a Catholic High School and an Islamic k-12 school. When she works in the Islamic school, she wears a scarf covering her head, not out of pressure but for respect for their culture. She also lets her students know that she is Christian, but wants to show them that you should respect other people's culture. Compared with one of her colleagues who brings in Bacon sandwiches and doesn't really care, I think it's a nice outlook to have.

I don't really like the law being enforced, it should be a choice, but by the same token, it should perhaps be more like the rules in petrol stations and banks with crash helmets, you need to take them off before being served. I don't know what would be right though.

To be honest, I think it's creepier that your fiancee wears a head scarf than her colleague brings bacon sandwiches. How do we teach children respect for other cultures if they are pandered to? They might well grow up thinking that women of ALL cultures should wear head scarves out of respect for Islam.

Does her colleague eat bacon sandwiches in front of the kids? Should teachers at Islamic schools be subjected to body searches for things that are forbidden by Islam?

I really agree that we should show respect to other cultures, but pandering to them does nobody any good.

I live in a very diverse neighbourhood and I frequently see women in various head scarves. The burka and niqab seem quite antisocial and I find it hypocritical that totally covering one's face like that is accepted but if I walked into these same places with a motorcycle helmet, a balaclava, a mask, etc. I'd be asked to take it off, leave or some other such demonstration of being unwelcome/distrusted. If I said it was part of my religion, would it be accepted?

I find many Islamic beliefs particularly frustrating because many of the beliefs and or believers are SO inflexible but often expect total flexibility for themselves. I'm fed up with religious beliefs being unchallenged and so quickly accepted simply for being religious. Now in general letting people believe what they want is great policy but I think it can go too far. E.g., cases of women wanting to wear burkas and niqabs in identification photos. Come on! :-/ If I go to Dubai on holiday and bring a codeine painkiller that you can buy over the counter here, I could go to jail (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7234786.stm). Or if my husband gives me a little kiss in public, jail (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8602449.stm). Yet, hey, come to the UK and do whatever the hell you please and even try to change our laws or litigate (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23420128-hairdresser-sued-for-refusing-to-hire-muslim-woman-in-a-headscarf.do) if you don't get your way. On one hand the UK's openness is wonderful but the other hand is being walked all over.
    .

I'm very hard of hearing and almost always have to see a person's face in order to understand what they're saying. Women who cover their faces are impossible for me to understand.

I can't imagine a niqab wearing teacher or any other job where the woman is in contact with the public. At what point does one's religion take preference over basic human interaction? Niqab wearing women should not be awarded any protections because of their refusal to integrate. Whose rights take precedence?

Here in the US, a lot of immigrants also believe in exceptionalism when it comes to respecting laws and customs. Part of the solution is not allowing tidal waves of immigration, rather small trickles over time. Those tsunamis end up creating ghettoes and that benefits nobody.

    What a ridiculous title.

Congratulations, you just been played as free promotion. Steve Jobs has been doing this his entire career. BTW, iWoz was the first in the "i" biography titled stories.

However, my favorite is "The Macintosh Way" buy Guy Kawasaki. I have turned down jobs from people who trashed that book.

Less than 50% the performance, not that hard to figure out. :p :D

Single threaded performance is almost the same (2.3 vs. 2.5), the Quad shows its performance in multithreaded apps, though.
However, even though you might not necessarily run applications that can fully utilise all 4 available cores, I believe that the Quad will do better even in everyday tasks.

The jump from 2 to 4 cores is definitely noticeable as most people run a lot of apps simultaneously and the 2 additional cores distribute the load.
A single G5 core gets loaded pretty quick (web browses can easily max out a core, which doesn't leave much room for additional tasks).

I see your point, though. The LCS is kind of a deal breaker if you're not too tech savvy and can't replace the pumps/hoses.

You see.. herein lies the problem.. If I would have held on to my Quad G5, I would never have been able to afford the Mac Pro.. looking now at what I currently use my mac pro for I am starting to wonder if I really needed to have it in the first place.

I only got it because I wanted a nice Intel Machine for my modern stuff(handbrake, dvd encoding, dvd ripping, burning two dvds/cd's simultaneously).. And most of my everyday stuff I do is done on my PB G4 1.67 which I acquired almost brand new from someone.

I guess its a tough decision for me to consider getting back the G5 Quad and also having the 2010 Mac Pro, since I will never utilize the full potential of that machine.. video editing doesn't interest me, yet there has to be some way I can get real benefit out of the 6-core machine.. It originally was a 2009 mac pro w3580 3.33 quad-core, but then I had to have the latest and greatest, so for 300 dollars got the 2010 backplane board and processor board.

Then in December, got the 6-core processor for like 700 dollars.. Now looking back I am sort of at a tough decision.

I really didn't want to sell off my MDD and G5 Quad, but realizing 3 years ago at the time that I would never have been able to afford an intel mac, other than the mac mini, I wanted something with expandability as those are the type of machines I am used to. I don't foresee getting the 2012 mac pro when it comes out since I have no use for such power..

Thunderbolt won't help me with time machine or cloning using carbon copy cloner, so its a waste for me.

Sorry if I went off topic a little, just trying to decide if I wanted to get a Quad G5 myself once again or not.

While I really dont like what you say Im afraid I completely agree, apple has done a great job of challenging windows in the home market, and it seems also the edu market, but the corporate market, apple has a long long way to go!

I think Apple would be all too happy to just own the home and edu markets. If they get back up to 30% of the edu market and can match that in the home market, I think they'd be ecstatic, since their total market share would probably more than double to 10% or more of the overall market.

I think he may be right. I've never seen a parking lot with rows of cars parallel parked.

Edit: Although I do not see brake lights engaged on most of the cars.

Guess you've never been on "parking lot" 405 in Southern California :p

I continue to be amazed by the number of students at my community college that have iPhones. These are students who for the most part are struggling to make ends meet, yet were willing to spend their limited cash that way. There are at least two or three students with iPhones in each of my classes; two years ago, I didn't see any -- and mine was a curiosity to them.

well depends how things are paid for you might be less impressed.
I am a struggling college student but out side of school expenses my only other cost is gas for my car.

That means insurance and phone bill is covered by my parents that frees up a fair amount of resources to get smart phones and from others I talk to in school that is often times a big help parents give is covering cost other than school.

As for smart phones I know at were I go to school the phone that is common on campus depends which college you are in. If it is the computer science and Engineering then iPhone is in the minority. Android rules the roost followed by Blackberry. The iPhone in a class of 30 you will see 2 some times 3. By enlarge it is Android followed by blackberry. iPhone is in the small minority. WP7 I will see out numbering the iPhone soon.

Now if you go to the other building on that has education and business (along with art) rules change and iPhone becomes much more popular.

Now back to us SCE students area a lot of us own iPods and I know the iPads out number the iPhones but for a phone we just do not like iOS end of story. Android is were a lot of the students want to go for.

Taking a look at the pictures on iFixit, did it look like the CPU may be replaceable? That would be an interesting shift. Those brave souls could upgrade this machine albeit void the warranty. But most interesting. I like what I see.

I have better sense than to jump up there in the first place.

I believe in people taking responsibility for their actions. The guy should have stopped. The woman should never have jumped up there. But I'm afraid of establishing a legal precedent that says it's okay to put yourself into a bad situation and then blame someone else for how it turns out.

What if he had been pointing a gun at her and she had stood her ground? Would it be her fault if he pulled the trigger?

    Rosetta improvements:
I cannot believe how well Rosetta handles Photoshop and Illustrator CS2 on these new Core 2 Duos. My buddy brought his new 20" iMac over Sunday night so I could show him some little maintance tips and so I could show him how to partition the drive out. (His first Mac ever! I was so proud of him, almost like seeing your son grow up and become a man:D ) We put his Adobe CS1 on and tried it out.... Holy Cow his CS1 was almost as fast as my CS2 on my Dual Core 2.0 GHz PM G5!!!! This has come a looooong way in such a short time period. Also, I have tried out the Quad MacPros at the Apple Store with Photoshop and they run just as fast as my PM G5. I can't wait to see what happens when Adobe CS3 is UB.

As for Office....... what in the hell are people bitching about the Rosetta performance for???? It's Office people. I have not noticed hardly ANY difference in running Word and Excel on my MacBook compared to the PM G5.
Maybe I'm not concidered a "power Office user", but it runs as I would expect a Microsoft app to run.

    Leopard Release:
I don't think Apple will push the release up at all. Apple never follows the intentions of others, if they did the 8 Core Mac Pro would be out already.

But I already know what is going to happen, Vista will come out with it's iLife-clone and reviews will rave about how great these new features are and we, who have been using iLife apps for over 5 years will be relegated to a footnote in the news pieces.

I'm glad that the "Get a Mac" ads have been out for the last year. It gives us some credit in the world. I love the Office commercial, how the PC is surprised that we can run Office. That is soooooo true in the business world. No one realizes that Office was actually created and ran on a Mac years before Windows even came out.

Things sure are quiet over in camp Apple...

With the influx of new mobile phones/carriers and mp3 players recently flooding the market, I can't help but think any (Tues)day now, Apple is gonna drop the BOMB.
