However, the USA has one gigantic advantage that other countries don't have: an unprecedented ground transportation infrastructure to move goods around on both rail and paved roads.

I guess you don't live in the USA. Every thing is failing apart and the roads are WAY OVER neglected! Don't even get me started on rail systems!

I don't think anyone is better than anyone else. I simple stated my opinion, if I were in the OP's situation, I would consider a mini... then, I got flamed for it. PPC are still great as servers and for iTunes and web surfing. I apprecaite the PPC, but I feel, the mini is more bang for your buck.

Now now, calling Budweiser a beer is a stretch as it is and calling it a lager is an insult to any properly brewed lager out there. Like someone else in this thread stated before it's a cheap diluted ricewine with hops added for something pretending to be taste. As for Chimay, never had it but if it is in the same range of products as that .... stuff.... from Anheusser operates in, it probably isn't a belgium ale either.....
    Cheers,

    Ahmed

Chimay is made by Belgian monks. I used it as an example precisely because it is not nearly in the same range as Budweiser. ;)

That's totally nuts! You really have to be stupid and careless to do such a dumb things. It is bad because you are destroying a good for no reason and it is also bad because you are creating some pollution for no reason as well.

So strange... so this school has an unprotected wireless network? No password, no encryption? If they setup proper protection only those allowed to use the network would be able to. Then you or anyone else could bring their laptop to school to take notes.

At the high school my daughter went to. They encouraged the students to all buy ibooks (2002). If you couldn't afford one, the school loaned you one. These were used in almost all classes and used to do research and writing assignments.

On the MacBook Pros the graphics connection was downgraded from PCIe x16 to PCIe x8 to get PCIe lanes for the TBolt controller.

Wait, seriously?! Not that I'm doubting your credibility ('cause I'm not), but mind linking me to your source on that?

For what it's worth (I didn't know this either):

The graphics card of the 2011 MacBook Pro is connected on PCI-Express 8x (http://forum.hardmac.com/index.php?showtopic=9886&pid=17792&st=0&#entry17792)

Unlike in the 2010 models, the graphics card in the new 15" and 17" MacBook Pro is not connected through a PCI-Express 2.0 16x, but only an 8x.

    http://files.macbidouille.com/mbv2/news/news_03_11/radeon8x_copy.jpg

From a practical point of view, it doesn't change anything and there is no decrease in the performances, since the 4 GB/s bandwidth is more than enough to get the best out of the graphics card. Instead of getting angry at Apple, we tried to understand the reasons of that choice.

To begin with, the Sandy Bridge processor has 16 PCI-Express 16x lines available and 8 others that are used to connect the Cougar Point controller.
There are also 4 PCI-Express 2.0 links on the CPU and the controller (DMI link), used to connect the two components with a 2 GB/s bandwidth, which is plenty enough to connect the CPU to the hard drive(s) and all the non graphics components.

Even if all the PCI-Express links offer the same data transfer rate, the ones that are integrated to the processor offer the advantage of never being limited in their transfer of data to the processor.

Here is part of the internal diagram of the 2011 MacBook Pro.

    http://files.macbidouille.com/mbv2/news/news_03_11/radeon8x2.jpg

We can see on this diagram that Apple decided to limit the connection to the graphics chip in order to get 4 PCI-Express links for the Thunderbolt. This decision was probably made to maximize the performances of the connector and also prevent from making the DMI link a bottleneck.

That decision will have a limited impact on the performances of the THunderbolt concerning file transfer but it could become important if the data transferred has to be treated directly by the CPU.

In the end, at first it looks like Apple limited the graphics card, but that is not the case, and instead we get a more coherent architecture, which will allow the Thunderbolt to show its best.

TB is PCIe (among other things).

Apple's spec sheets have always been masterful at implying more than is actually available.

Et tu, Aiden ;). We agree on many points, but this one… j/k

It would make no sense for Apple to go with a CDMA technology though. GSM is used by almost everyone in the world bar a few markets. With a GSM phone they have the whole European market for phones for example, with a CDMA phone they have a market limited to mainly Verizon and the few other carriers around the world who use CDMA (IIRC, some in S. Korea, some in Brazil and perhaps some other in North and South America).

Apple most likely don't want to have to make loads of different phones, so I'd expect the iPhone to be GSM Quad Band, therefore covering the largests possible market for mobile phones.

Right. It would be foolish of Apple to have an extra Engineer on staff just to handle CDMA and doubly foolish to make a second radio board for it, and triply foolish to have a second stock SKU just for the 90 Million or so CDMA users in the US and the few hundred million (335M+ total) others in Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, India, China, Australia and Iraq.

It would make no sense. Lunacy, I tell you - Lunacy.

What would be even crazier would be to use a TI software-defined-radio to handle CDMA, GSM, Wi-Max, and 802.11. Nuts!

this looks like it might be a best buy exclusive. I truly think AT&T knows nothing about it. Why would they hide it? They get a commission for every phone sold at the AT&T store so they want customers. They had problem telling people the release date on previous release dates.

    #1 - Culture
#2 - Relative wealth of country and self-reliance of citizens as a whole (however, they are WAY in debt, worse even than the U.S.)
#3 - They just experienced a catastrophe so horrific, it's brining the people together, not apart. Similar to how 9/11 did in America.
#4 - Disaster zone is in very specific areas, and everything in those areas is essentially completely destroyed. Several blocks away, things are relatively untouched.

The concept is based around adding physical/tactile controls over a touch-sensitive pad.

    Prior Art: MacNTouch (http://www.fingerworks.com/MacNTouch_product.html)

Okay, so it doesn't have the "physical/tactile controls" over the touch-sensitive pad, but it is one giant touch-sensitive pad.

Yes, I know about the $215 cost. I wish they had a cheaper option. Less than $100 would be a lot easier for me. Oh well, I'll just save for next year! For now, I got one of the OWC free exhibit hall passes.

If some of the components come from Japan, is Apple scanning the finished units for radiation?

The recommendation is that you don't feed the iPad to an infant. Other uses are OK.

One does have to remember though, styling is subjective. You may find the Volt to be ugly, but I like it's design. Sure it isn't the best design out there, but considering the Prius, Insight, and other dedicated hybrid/electric models that I can think of( where manufactures design it to be aerodynamic and not stylish per se), I think it is one the best looking of the bunch( easily beats Prius, Insight, etc, but Tesla and Fisker make decent looking vehicles as well).

ironically the most aerodynamic production vehicle currently is the european spec Mercedes E220 blue efficiency diesel.
Gonna be interesting later this year with mercedes (E class) and citroen (3008) launching their diesel hybrids in europe. Mercedes already anounnced that they will be putting them as fast as they can across their line up the next 2 years. It could very well be that when the Volt launches around here that a C class diesel hybrid is already around the corner and thus ruin their good press.

regarding the Volt design i think the front and back view look great but where they really dropped the ball is the side view including the doors/side windows.

edit: can actually anybody come up with a more ugly car than the juke without the Aztek or a SangYong ? honestly i'm hard pressed

Cut & Paste for god's sake. At least give us the option to enable/disable cut and paste.

It's my problem if I'm stupid enough to not copy and paste directly. I find it a hassle to go and open up a folder and drag and drop. It's 2011.

How about "clipboard" becomes a folder so that whenever you do forget something that you cut, and you cut over it, you can go back to the folder and retrieve it?

Man, I wish I could get paid for writing stuff like this... The exciting details are that it will look like an iPod and come in iPod colors? Talk about going out on a limb with one arm around the trunk...

"We believe this smart phone has been in development for over 12 months and has overcome substantial challenges including design, interference, battery life and other technical glitches."?!? Is this insight? Apple's been working on it for a year and faced challenges such as design? A cell phone had interference and battery life issues?

"We believe the go-to-market strategy is likely the gating factor in Apple shipping its cell phone imminently"?!? Deciding how to ship is what's keeping them from shipping...

I swear this guy made a recent career change from writing horoscopes.
